Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachy
at the State Tretyakov Gallery

The Museum Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachy is the official church of the Tretyakov Gallery. Museum pieces constitute a major part of the church's internal decoration. These include the icons of its central and side iconostases, i.e. St. Nicholas and the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Disciples; and the altar crosses and liturgical objects.

The Virgin of Vladimir – a world-famous piece of art as well as a much-revered icon for all Christians, the jewel of the Gallery's collections – resides in the church, in a special tabernacle. Being housed in the church museum, the precious icon is both well cared for by museum professionals and available for worship.

At service times, the church is open to all believers, while the rest of time, it becomes yet another hall of the Tretyakov Gallery where visitors can come to see the art of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Our parish is not merely a building filled with icons and other religious art. Our parish is a community of believers led by the church clergy and our rector, Archpriest Nikolay Sokolov. The 'Tolmachy spirit' unites people of many professions, social positions and lifestyles. This is achieved by our social events, mutual support, Sunday School for both children and adults, pilgrimages, and working together on our Tolmachy Magazine. Last but not least, the wonderful singing of our choir, precented by Alexey Puzakov, helps to create a uniquely prayerful atmosphere during our services.
